What actually matters when a Ugandan hospital or clinic evaluates hospital management software, mobile money integration, offline reliability, and the regional realities generic systems miss.

Uganda's private and mission hospitals are under the same pressure as their Kenyan neighbours, growing patient volumes, paper records that don't scale, and cash flow that depends on billing being fast and accurate. A hospital management system built for the region should reflect that, not just be a Western system with the currency symbol changed.

## What "built for the region" should mean

- **Mobile money billing.** Mobile money is how a large share of patients pay, in Uganda that increasingly includes MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money alongside cash and insurance. A system that only supports card or bank payment misses how your patients actually pay.
- **Offline reliability.** Connectivity gaps are routine outside major towns. A system that stops working the moment the internet drops isn't usable for a typical shift.
- **Multi-facility support.** Many Ugandan health networks run more than one facility, sometimes a hospital plus satellite clinics. Reporting and stock should roll up across all of them, not require logging into each separately.
- **Insurance and scheme billing.** Whether it's a private insurer, an NGO-funded scheme, or a corporate scheme, the system needs to handle claims and eligibility without manual re-entry.

## The core modules to evaluate

- Patient registration and electronic medical records
- Outpatient and inpatient/ward management
- Laboratory ordering and results
- Pharmacy and inventory, with expiry-aware stock control
- Billing across cash, mobile money, and insurance
- Reporting across facilities, not just per-branch

## Questions worth asking any vendor

1. Which mobile money providers does billing actually support, and is confirmation automatic or manual?
2. What happens to a consultation or bill if the internet drops mid-shift?
3. Can our reporting roll up across multiple facilities from one login?
4. How is our patient data isolated if we're on a shared, multi-tenant platform?
5. What does onboarding and staff training actually look like, and how long does it take?

## Red flags

- A demo that only shows card payment, with mobile money as an afterthought
- No offline mode, in a market where that's a daily reality, not an edge case
- Per-facility licensing that makes it expensive to add a satellite clinic
- No clear answer on how your data is separated from other customers on the platform

## Where AfyaConnect fits

AfyaConnect was built for East Africa's operating conditions from the start, mobile money billing, an installable app that keeps working offline and syncs when connectivity returns, multi-facility reporting from one dashboard, and tenant-isolated data for every facility on the platform. The same laboratory, pharmacy, billing, and clinical record modules used across Kenyan facilities are available to hospitals and clinics in Uganda.

The team that builds and supports AfyaConnect writes these guides. Everything here is written against software we actually ship and support in live Kenyan facilities — the SHA claims flow, the PPB controlled substances register and the eTIMS invoicing described in these guides are modules we maintain, not features we read about. Where regulation is still moving, we say so rather than guessing.

- Supports 40+ healthcare facilities across Kenya and East Africa
- Builds and maintains the SHA/NHIF claims, PPB register and KRA eTIMS modules described in these guides
- Works to the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 and Digital Health Act 2023 requirements for patient data
